Just a fraction of the cool buses at Busfusion 2002

Busfusion was a great event again this year. We left Toronto a bit later than planned, and so we missed all the traffic and still got a great camping spot when we got there at 1:15AM Saturday. The bus ran well and the Westrailer followed perfectly.

Saturday morning we woke up and cooked breakfast, and headed over to check out the swap meet. I picked up a hubcap that was within my budget, and pointed out a nice set of VDO cylinder temp. guages that Jamie RIvers bought. Then it was time for the door prizes, and everyone gathered around as some really nice loot was handed out. I took home a copy of "Camper and Commercial VW" magazine, which was imported from the UK. After that we headed back to headquarters for lunch.

Fuelled up and looking for a place to cause trouble, we headed into town to check out the ArtsFusion Festival. Lots of street performers and artists, and lots of shops to browse through. The bus painting was going well, and the trampoline exposition was AMAZING. They did some stunts you just couldn't imagine.... three on the trampoline at once and bouncing 25 ft high.

The Ottawa Region Samba Band led the painted buses into the fairgrounds at 4PM and played for us a while. Later in the afternoon we had dinner and once that was cleared away we gathered around to swap VW stories and tip a frosty or two.

Sunday morning I rose at 8 and put the coffee on. Other Bug Pack campers started to rise soon after the coffee aroma got around, so it was time to get the Breakfast Burrito's cooking. I enjoyed the Burritos that the Full Moon Bus Club served at Everybus, and thought we should bring them to Almonte. Soon the kitchen area was an organized pandemonium of chopping, frying and stirring, and everyone enjoyed a great breakfast. I am definitely going to plan this again for Buses Of the Corn.

After breakfast I heard from Frank Condelli that the reason Kendrew Pape hadn't been see was because he was stranded in Kingston with a bad alternator. Luckily he got stranded in a campground with internet access. Dave Ireland gave him my cell number, and he called about an hour later. I conferred with the group and decided we could get him home with the spare battery I had just installed in my bus the week previous. Dad and I diverted to Kingston on the route home and found Kendrew, fixed up his 78 Auto 7-passenger "Buster" and we were on our way.

....But not for long. It seemed that as soon as we got under way my youngest one badly needed a potty stop. Just as we pulled off the highway at the McD's in Napanee, Kendrew's bus stalled out and we couldn't restart it. We checked for spark: Nothin. So we swapped the coil -- Nothing. I looked into the distributor and the points weren't opening. Kendrew had a spare set of points so Dad installed them and Buster's engine lit up immediately. I checked the dwell (50 degrees) and timing (6 degrees... not great but OK for now). With that done we reloaded the kids and headed for home; stopping at Oshawa to rejoin the group for a friendly BBQ at Collie Corner's place.
